Light That Is Not a Creature
On Athos, a defense is written: the light seen in prayer is not a metaphor and not a created lamp. It is God, they say, as energy, not as essence.

A dark chapel. Is the light you expect in the lamps, or somewhere the lamps cannot go?

Gregory Palamas, Triads in Defense of the Holy Hesychasts. Against Barlaam of Calabria. The Tabor light of the Transfiguration, in this theology, can be participated as uncreated energy. The essence of God remains unknowable. The 1351 council in Constantinople sides with Palamas in the Byzantine church.
Palamas, The Triads. Trans. Nicholas Gendle. Paulist Press, 1983. Hesychia is stillness. The Jesus Prayer is a practice, not a laboratory of photisms.
Hildegard’s lux vivens is another Christian seeing. It is not Palamas’s essence-energies distinction. James’s “inner light” is another century’s English. Do not flatten them into one glow.
A modern neurologist may offer epilepsy or migraine. That is a later sorting. The Triads is doctrine and defense, not a case file.
Whether a light can be God without being God’s essence is a theological claim. It is not neuroscience, and not nothing.

Living light
Hildegard also writes light. The orders, the centuries, and the metaphysics differ.
One question remains
Awakening · What changes when consciousness recognizes something differently?
If a light is uncreated, is the seeing a creature’s act, a gift that is not an act, or a confusion of those two?
